I visited Japan about six years ago, and stumbled onto a bar in Kyoto that was unlike anything I had ever seen, or experienced. The place was dimly lit, stocked with leather chairs and lined with dark wood. Aside from the booze, behind the bar stood a massive bookshelf filled with records. I assumed they were a prop, but when I sat down, I was handed a book the size of the yellow pages filled with every record in the collection, and their tracklisting. After ordering my drink, the bartender asked if I had any requests. My mind was blown, and my night was a wrap. I thought I found this rare oasis, but after reading this article on Resident Advisor, it seems like record orientated bars are kind of a thing in Japan. Definitely pursue one if you’re in the city.
